The New Year serves as an opportunity to start fresh, so why not capitalize on this time and freshen up the space that you freshen up in? “The New Year is a particularly exciting time to begin the bathroom remodeling process as many new design trends are being unveiled,” said David Kallie, CR, CAPS, Dimension Design-Build-Remodel, Inc. CEO. “From unusual shapes like spheres and ovals to modern walk-in shower designs and glass partitions, to floating bathroom vanities and natural materials like wood, it’s clear bathroom design in 2022 will prioritize style, relaxation, and comfort.”

It is anticipated that modern bathroom design will gradually pull away from straight lines and sharp corners and gravitate more towards shapes that are spherical and oval in nature. “You can expect this newfound interest in curved edges to be applied to various bathroom elements, including round wall mirrors, circular lighting fixtures, penny round tile for floors and walls, and even egg-shaped bathtubs and round vessel sinks,” David said. Inspired by nature, this organic take on bathroom design is quite versatile; in other words, it will complement a myriad of bathroom design styles, from rustic, to transitional, contemporary, and everything in between.

Expect walk-in showers to steal the spotlight in the New Year as well. “More and more showers will literally be relocating from the corner of the bathroom to the center of the room in order to become the dominant focal point of the space,” said David. Adding to their prominence, modern showers are typically illuminated by recessed LED lighting and often feature built-in shelving, a luxurious shower head, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

“Speaking of glass, glass partitions are also expected to make their mark in 2022,” he said. “Not only are they easy to clean, but they can make a bathroom look and feel larger due to their space-saving design.” In addition to separating a wet area from a dry one, glass partitions are also commonly used to separate the bathroom itself within a master bedroom suite.

Minimalism is anticipated to be a running theme in bathroom design in 2022, because alongside glass partitions, this concept also applies to floating bathroom vanities. These types of vanities fully embrace the minimalist style to create a roomier environment. “More specifically, floating bathroom vanities don’t take up any floor space thanks to their strategic design, yet still offer plenty of storage space,” David said. “Plus, they’re available in numerous finishes, colors, sizes, and options, including single or double-sink options.”

Wood may not be the first material that comes to mind when considering a bathroom remodel; after all, natural wood absorbs water. “However, modern bathroom tiles can realistically imitate the intricacies of natural wood and are expected to be popular in the New Year,” said David. “Tiles representing wood can work well on bathroom floors and walls as they add depth and aesthetic appeal to the space.” Alternatively, teak, ipe, and cedar wood types thrive in wet spaces as they are naturally resistant to rot and moisture. “To really make a statement using natural wood, consider a pairing with black metal or golden brass elements to enhance the inherent beauty of these organic elements,” he said.

Vinyl is always a safe option. “Ultimately, adding wood or wood-like elements to the bathroom will help create a warm and inviting atmosphere,” said David.

If the plan is to remodel a bathroom in celebration of the New Year, it will be helpful to refer to modern bathroom design trends for inspiration. “In addition to creating a modern custom space that you can relax and unwind in after a long day, a successful bathroom remodel will improve your home’s overall energy efficiency, maximize functionality, and increase your home’s value,” David said.
